Hide parameter for some users

I'm trying to decide whether I can use sql reports for my application, and
the main problem I've run into thus far is that my available parameters need
to change based on the user who is running the report. For instance,
low-level users should only be able to see data about themselves, whereas
managers should be able to select from a drop-down list of all users. Is
there any way to set the user prompt/visibility for a parameter based on the
role of the person running the report? The easiest way I can think of to manage this is to have two versions of the
same report. With the regular version, pass =User!UserID into the query
parameter. In the manager's version, populate the same parameter from a
drop-down list. Then set different permissions when you deploy the reports.
If you need to do it in a single report, you might be able to write some
custom code to pass in flags to the query and work out the difference
between managers and employees in your data source query.

want to maintain separate versions. I think I'm going to be able to go with
passing in User!UserID to the query that builds the drop-down list of users.
I can't hide the drop-down list, but at least I can make sure it's only
populated with a single user if that user doesn't have permission to see
other people's data.

at someone else's data) you could always create a permissions table that
contains all of the usernames that each user is allowed to look at, and have
that table always be in the source query join, with User!UserID passed into
the query. We're doing a variation on this (a join to a parameterized UDF)
for our data security solution.

My Reports feature. Linked reports are effectively shortcuts to a
report.
But, the nice touch is that you can set the parameters to behave a bit
differently, for instance there is a prompt user check box on each
parameter in the linked reports properties. This doesn't affect the
original report. If you update the original, the linked report will
reflect these changes too. Security can be set completely independantly
too.

Hide Parameter field, rc:parameters ?

Hi,
I want to reference from one reports to another and I don't want my users to
see the parameters used. In case of a url-reference I can use the

hide my report toolbar

Hi.

i would like to configure my reports to hide the Toolbar. I'm not using any aspx page to contain my report, I'm just opening it from the server with IE.

is there a way to configure the report thet he does't have any tool bar?

Thanks,

Roy.

Look in the BOL for ULR parametrization, the rc:Toolbar=no should do the job.

Thanks :)

i don't know what is "BOL for ULR ".

but the code was good (i used rc:toolbar=false).

thanks!

|||Just to add, BOL means Books Online which is actually the help of SQL Server. look for the URL access there.

Hide in list view?

Can anyone tell me when you would want to do this and what exactly it does? I've seen this as a property of reports.
TIAThis would just hide the report in the list view (which is the default view
in report manager). E.g. if you have a main report, which invokes several
subreports and you don't want the subreports to show up in the report
manager list view, then you would apply this setting.

Hide Certain reports from users

Hi All,
Is it any way to hide a particular report from listing in the report folder?
My actual problem is I deployed 2 reports in the report server and one of
them is a subreport. And I want the users should able to run only the main
report and not the subreport.
TIA,
SamuelIn report manager go to the properties page, the general sub tab there is a
check box for 'Hide in List View'. When a users browses to that folder in
the report manger (using list view, not detail view) then they will not see
that item.

Hide Certain Parameters Dynamically

We have a number of reports which are used by both employees and
administrators with multiple parameters. In many of these reports we have
some parameters unique to the employees which we would like to automatically
set through URL access for our employees and either hide or set them as
read-only so an employee cannot view someone else's data. However, we want
to allow the administrators to change these values so they can view data from
any employee.
So, is there any way to dynamically hide a single parameter while still
showing the remaining ones, or to dynamically make a single parameter
read-only without creating a custom front end? I don't need to know how to
pass default values, just how to programmatically change what parameters are
hidden / read-only.
Thanks in advance.
DavidDavid,
It isn't possible to hide a parameter or make it readonly. A possible
solution for this problem is to create two new reports. One for the employees
and one for the administartors. Both reports get the proper parameters which
they may change. In both reports you include an subreport, the original one
with all parameters. Now you can link the parameters from the report to the
subreport. In teh case for the employees this meens that some parameters of
your original report will have an fixed value.
This solution will also prevent employees from 'trying' out the parameters
with URL Access.

needs using linked reports. I created a linked report to the original, and
hid any parameters that the employee does not need to change. It solves the
problem of having to maintain and edit 2 reports when changes are made, and
appears to have solved my issue with being able to change parameter settings
for the 2 separate versions.

Hide browser menu in viewer

I am calling the report server via http to view the SQL 2005 reports. Is
there a way to hide the browser bar at the top that has the browser printer
icon on it so people do not click the wrong icon to print? Thanks.
DavidYou need some browser client side code (javaScript) to open a new browser
window. In this javascript code, you can specify is you want browser's
menu/toolbar/scrollbar shown or not. You can also specify the window's size,
location on screen. This all client side code. No server side code can do
this.

Hide Breadcrumbs

My users access SQL reports via weblinks from a Sharepoint portal. Even
though they don't have backward access through the folders, they can still
hee the breadcrumbs. How do I hide the breadcrumbs to the folder heirarchy?
Thanks for the help
JDJD,
It sounds like you are copying the URL out of Internet Explorer and
making it the source of web part in SharePoint. There are actually
SharePoint web parts that have been provided by Microsoft for this. For
more info, go to http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms159772.aspx
If you want to keep using URLs, you can use the ReportViewer control to
open the report instead of opening a Report Manager URL. The Report
Viewer control does not show the report WITHIN Report Manager, so there
are no breadcrumbs.
With:
server name = goodwin
Report Server virtual directory = reportserver
report path = Production/Reports/
report name = Report1
The URL would look like this:
http://goodwin/reportserver/Pages/ReportViewer.aspx?/Production/Reports/Report1
To modify toolbar options, you can use some ReportViewer parameters.
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms152835.aspx
Hope this helps!

Hide / Disable Report Parameter

Hi

I am using reporting services 2005. (sql server 2005 Sp2).

I have two parameters on the reports. Both parameter are not related to each other.

If user selects first parameter value I want to Hide or Disable second parameter drop down.

Is it possible in Reporting services?

Thanks for everyone's help.

Regards

Swam

I am guessing a big NO

You could simply not use the 2nd parameter in the report

and have a text with "2nd parameter will not be used if 1st parameter is used"

|||

Swam wrote:

You can't do that, but what you can do is make the default value and even the *contents* of the second parameter dependant on what is selected in the first parameter. I would have the second dropdown default to null or an empty string if a value was selected in the first dropdown.

Hidden parameters + automatic hiding deployment script

Hi,
I have a number of reports which hidden parameters. The problem is
that when
I change the reports, or as the number of reports grows, I'm then
having to
manually go through the report in report manager and remove the prompt
string, making sure that 'Prompt user' is checked to put the

Is there any way I could do this automatically? All the report
parameters I
wish to hide will have consistent names so it would make my life a lot
easier
if I could do this.
Can I do it through the web service - or maybe through scripting?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Helpdesk database statistics crosstab report

Hello SQL and Crystal Reports friends,

I am trying to make a report and need some help please.

It is a helpdesk database. Jobs are logged, and then closed. Each of
these events is timestamped in the database in the date fields
DateLogged and DateClosed

JanFebMarApr

NewClosedNewClosedNewClosedNewClosed
10 51362364525

etc.

I am trying to create a crosstab style report that will show each month
of the year along the top, and then the number of jobs logged and closed
during that month. The problem I am having is that when Crystal Groups
by the month, you have to specify a date field for the grouping. If I
select DateLogged, then the crosstab will accurately show all of the
jobs logged for that month, but is not correct for the jobs closed
during that month. The problem is that is counting the number of jobs
that were both logged AND closed during the grouped month.

Can anyone see how such a report is possible?

Furthermore, I would like to be able to calculate how many jobs were
open at the start of the month, as well as at the end of the month.

Thank you for your help.

really want to do it in sql, I have 3 articles that explained how to
do it using transact-sql. (Painful)

a few ideas, but isn't really what I'm after.

I have been able to achieve what I'm after partly by combining 2 queries
with the UNION operator. The first query aggregates the count of all
rows that occur on datelogged. The second query does the same with
dateclosed. Then I combine them to get the results. It works well, but
I am still looking for a way to count the number of jobs that were open
at a particular point in time.

Thanks.

Help: want to check if the report has any data

Hi ,
I have some Reports that don't always return data.
I want to check if the report returned any data and if it does then
send it out the plp on the subscription list.
What would be the best way to approach exception reporting In RS ?This has been requested a lot and unfortunately there is no good way to do
this. The only way to achieve this would be through Data Driven
subscriptions. The query used for the subscription would need to return no
rows if the report will not have any data. This is a pain because the query
could be difficult to write (and not possible if there are multiple data
sets in the report) and the query could become out of date if the report
query changes.
We are looking to add this functionality to a future release.

As a further comment on this, (I'm sure you guys have thought of it but just
in case):
Sometimes, we want to notify the user (particularly in the case of external
clients) that there is no data for a given report, other times we would just
not send the email. It would be great if you can supply these options.
Perhaps even the ability to supply a custom message.
many thanks
Matt

one of the things we are doing is putting a comment in the report which
indicates there is no data. It's a bit cludgy, but for the time being it's
the only thing we could come up with.
cheers

Help: Multiple sub-reports creating extra blank pages on print

I have a project with multiple pages of reports. I am using one main page with all the other reports added through the sub-report control. The only problem is, after the first page and a couple of the other pages, it inserts a blank page in the print preview. If I view and print the reports seperately, and not all on the main report page they print fine, they don't roll over, don't print any extra blank pages. This only occurs when I add all them all as sub-reports. The last 5 pages don't suffer from this problem either.

Can anyone think of what the problem could be, or a way to solve it? All the pages are 8.5x11 with no margins. As I said, the pages alone print fine without any extra blank pages, so I'm confused why they would create extra white pages when added as sub-reports. The other thing is, I thought that perhaps pages having text that go all the way to the bottom were causing the issue, but some of the reports don't have text that extend to the bottom, so that rules that out.

I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

We have seen a similar problem before. Can you try making the subreport element in the main report wider (enough to contain the entire subreport) and see that helps?|||The sub elements are all 8.5 inch,.25inch. The main report is 8.5,11 as are all the other reports. I initially had just placed them on there and they were seperated by a grid space or so, and their heights were all different (widths all stayed constant at 8.5). When I did this, though, the formatting was even worse and some of the reports would run into eachother. I would try making the main report length the size of all the subreports * 11 but I have 21 pages of reports and the maximum length is 160 inches.

Right now my main report is setup with each sub report element set at 8.5,.25 and starting from the very top of the main report, they are placed one below the other right where the previous one ends.
|||Any MSFT people who can provide any help? :||||I'm sorry to bump this again, but I could really use some assistance. I've tried everything and I can't get it to work.|||Can you attach your rdls? That'd help us repro and investigate the problem.

HELP: Exporting to excel

Hi,
I have been working on this problem for some time now and I am no closer to
a solution/answer.
The trouble is that I have created two reports which are basically tables
which display database data, with the input of several search parameters, but
when they get to a certain size (it appears to be like this) and I try to
export to excel I get this error when trying to open the file:
************
Microsoft Office Excel File Repair Log
Errors were detected in file 'ViewRequests.xls'
The following is a list of repairs:
Damage to the file was so extensive that repairs were not possible. Excel
attempted to recover your formulas and values, but some data may have been
lost or corrupted.
************
From this error, it seems like an excel problem, but we have tried different
versions and we do have a possible workaround we got from this site:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb en-us 820712
but it is very time consuming and not many users have two versions on their
machine.
A couple of people have told me that it must be something in the report, so
I am wondering if formulas or something else would cause this, or if anyone
as encountered this before, or if anyone can confirm is this is a report or
excel error. It appers to be happening only for larger files, but I am not
sure.
ThanksThis command reaks havick on my emf files.
=System.Math.Floor((RowNumber(table4_Group1)-1)/10)
It makes all of multiple page reports act differently and look
differently.
Trint|||Specer23,
You made no mention of clearing out your user/system temp folders or creating a
new Excel template or being sure that there are no Addins or similar templates
loaded in your Excel.
Nor did you mention the scope of affected users.
These are all cursory steps to solving any MSO product issue and if not done is
a grand waste of time if not done.
You certainly could have a problem w/your report, however once you tip Excel,
you must do a little clean up.
I also would through trial & error, get to the magic number between a rendered
report and Excel or not.
Then I'd look at the raw data near that point and look for things like coma's in
numeric fields, invalid dates etc...
